Journaling offers insight to the writer. Whether our entries are intended to be kept  private, or we are gathering stories and experiences to offer to an audience, the value is apparent.

I started keeping a birthday journal thirty years ago. On or close to my birthday, I write about what happened during the year and what my dreams and focuses will be for the coming year.

When looking back at the early entries, I’m presented with an understanding of why I made certain decisions and how my actions have shaped who I am today. An incremental shift in attitude unfolds year by year, and is laid out before me with clear whys and hows.

Journaling is an effective and engaging way to get to know ourselves and develop a greater understanding of others. With a clearer perspective of past actions, we can also forgive ourselves for the major goofs that spun us in difficult and unexpected directions.

There are many different types of journaling. Next time I’ll list some ideas that might be fun to try. Questions and comments are always welcome.
