Sculpting a paragraph
I love to edit. It’s in my nature, and I edit in all creative endeavours. Working in clay, as in writing, affords the best chance to whittle away unwanted bits. After sculpting a simple form, I choose a potter’s knife, removing the clay to reveal the character of the sculpture.
Taking a step back, I might find that I need to apply some more clay here and there. In writing, we pare down the paragraph keeping only enough sentences to make our point. Even a sentence that rocks might need to be pared away if it isn’t truly contributing.
But, hey, you’re a writer. Just like firing clay scraps into a bucket to be reclaimed later, You might be able to rework your gem and apply it somewhere else.
