Short Story Tips
Writing a short story can be highly engrossing. Your creative processes are engaged. The end result is positively speedy compared to writing a novel. If you are writing a novel, shifting your focus to a short story can be energizing. You’ll find yourself feeling fresh when you return to the novel, as if returning from a weekend vacation
Because your story will be short, there are a few things to consider.
Every word counts. Words must work to illustrate the theme and advance the story. If a word is unnecessary, edit it out.
The point of the story is the theme. Stay focused on that theme. Avoid unnecessary expansion, description or tangents.
Short stories usually cover short spans of time, focusing on a few characters and one event.Too many characters can confuse and distract. You can condense. Perhaps one or two characters can take on the actions of many.
Sources for story ideas are everywhere. Draw from your own memories, or if you come up empty, writing prompts can often shake loose some interesting tales. Whatever you write, your brain is engaged and exercising. You’re using eye/hand coordination, and you might end up with a gem.
