I’m a bit of an odd duck, or maybe  just sensitive. When I read a book or watch a film, I’m always looking for something uplifting. Stories are at the core of our development as humans. And story telling is the most ancient form of learning.

It’s in our nature to want our protagonist to succeed and grow. We want to succeed and grow. Adversity is part of our world, and in strong stories the hero is forged in the crucible, plunged into water and hammered, emerging bright and strong. Stories are powerful tools. They have the ability to lift us high or crush us. I choose to be lifted.

Our local film society presented a wonderful film from Australia called ‘Red Dog’. Sitting there in the dark, I laughed, and also soaked my napkin with tears. Based on a true story,  the film told of a remarkable red dog who changed people’s lives in unexpected ways. I felt myself becoming part of the story as my heart squeezed with sorrow, and expanded with joy. I  fell under the influence of the red dog. This is great story telling. This is what I search for.

We never really know how our actions effect another. Our words have power. They may even change someone’s course in life. For myself,  life changed when someone asked a simple question; “Why Not?”

I want to be like the red dog when I write, lifting and strengthening hearts. -It’s a tall order, but a goal worth striving to meet.
