Writing Tip Weekly: Lose the Wimpy Words
He almost reached the finish line. “Almost” is a wimpy word telling us little. With the finish line in sight, a powerful cramp doubled him over. Be specific. Words like probably, about, seems, only take us half way there.
The writer’s job is to place the reader in the action. Use strong imagery and verbs to carry the story. When you write, it is helpful to read your piece out loud. Listen to the pace and rhythm. If your imagination is halted by approximately, or nearly, kick up your prose with precision.
