Rabbit in Lupines | Painting By Lee Rawn

Writing is a solitary venture. We hole up for hours, head down, fingers tapping at the keys. Sometimes, it is eye opening and uplifting to meet with other writers to read and listen.

This last weekend, I attended the Mad Hatter’s Potluck for Writers. This was a dinner party to welcome spring and its accompanying high energy. Ten writers brought stories, poems, or excerpts from their works in progress.

I’m writing a memoir. I found this get-together an opportunity to share in a safe and encouraging atmosphere. Also, I was struck by the talent and diversity of the writers presenting their work. We enjoyed the evening so much that a repeat potluck is planned.

The point is to shake loose a bit. Get out there and share. Get some feedback and enjoy the myriad of writing styles that others bring. It’s important to note that this wasn’t a critiquing party. Only offer a comment if the writer has asked.

Our evening was more about getting out among friends, testing our wings, checking the airflow and updrafts. The food was excellent, we shared recipes, and the hats were wonderful. So think about calling some writer friends  maybe some musician friends too. You’ll be amazed at how fired up you feel when you return to your solitary venture. PS Happy Spring
